LONGUEUIL, Que.—Quebec’s 2022 maple syrup crop is the biggest in history, by a lot.

The Québec Maple Syrup Producers federation today announced the harvest in the province was an estimated 211.2 million pounds, smashing the old production record of 175 million pounds, set in 2020.

The production average was a yield of 4.26 pounds per tap in 2022, the federation said.

The rebound from last year’s dissappointing harvest will allow for replenishment of the Global Strategic Reserve, which had been drained to only a few million pounds of table grade syrup at the start of the season, officials said at the time.

Producers in Quebec will be paid approximately $2.95 Canadian per pound for their crop this year.

“We benefited from excellent weather conditions this spring, but our producers can also take credit for the record. It’s not only a large quantity—it’s high-quality maple syrup made by women and men who know what they’re doing,” said Luc Goulet, the new president of the federation. 

Meanwhile, the federation reports sales are still brisk. Last year saw 180.2 million pounds of maple syrup sold, an increase of 22 percent over the previous year. And Canadian exports, most of which was to the U.S. rose 20.7 percent to 160.78 million pounds, the federation said. 

Last year, the federation released 7 million new taps into its government sanctioned quota program, many of which were installed in time for this season.

The production survey was conducted by Groupe AGÉCO by phone, calling the owner/operators of 1,262 maple enterprises between April 25 and May 17. The margin of error is ±5.2%, 19 times out of 20.
